Dwightiana: The Art of Dwight Ripley

Dwightiana: The Art of Dwight Ripley

COMING SOON

Essays by Francesca Balboni, Douglas Crase, and Timothy Young.
Balancing somewhere between Cold War fears of the atomic bomb and the deserts where the bombs were tested, we find the magical drawings of Dwight Ripley. With his closest friends including Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Peggy Guggenheim (she claimed once to be his fiancée), filmmaker Marie Menken, and mega-critic Clement Greenberg, one might wonder how he never found his way into qrtworld celebrity. Now, thanks to a recently discovered suitcase of drawings, his work is being exhibited again—to be seen in the context of our own anxious age. Parallel to his beautiful, intricate drawings stands the life of a modest man who was also an expert botanist. Ripley and his partner Rupert Barneby, discovered seventy-four new species of plants in the deserts of Mexico and the United States. He was meanwhile a fervent but anonymous benefactor of mid-century art in New York (as foundational donor of the Tibor de Nagy Gallery he funded the publication of Frank O’Hara’s first book, among other projects). This landmark catalogue features more than fifty drawings, along with photographs, and archival items.
